E.A.T. — Upcoming Topics

EAT Meetings are the fourth Tuesday of each Month, at 6:30pm, at the GroundWorks space inside Holland District Library, 300S River Ave., in Holland MI.

Below are the topics of the video lectures by professor Richard Wolfson for September, October and November. After viewing the video lecture is a lab based on the lecture contents. The labs focus on providing hands on experience with components, breadboards, power supplies, DMMs, oscilloscopes, function generators and more. Often there is an amateur radio component to the labs.

Lecture topics.

September 24. Flip-Flop Circuits
By combining logic gates and positive feedback, obtain circuits with two stable states. These “flip-flop” circuits “remember” their current states until they are forced into the opposite state. Learn the inner workings of several types of flip-flops as they lay the foundations for memory circuits.

October 22. Shift and Divide-Your USB and Your Watch
Learn how electronic devices “talk” to each other by using flip-flops to send computer “words” one bit at a time, and observe how recipient devices reassemble incoming bits using serial-to-parallel conversions. See how Universal Serial Bus (USB) connections transmit communications between devices, and how the T flip-flop is utilized as a frequency divider in quartz watches.

November 26. Digital Memory
Examine the circuits that enable your devices to “remember” everything from contact information to your browsing history to the keystrokes you type on your computer. Compare random-access memory versus sequential memory as well as volatile and non-volatile memory.

Also keep an eye on the Herrick District Library website for upcoming events such as:
Wild Robot: Kids Learn to Solder – September 14, 1000am – 1200pm
Holland Repair Cafe – October 12, 1000am – 200pm Throw it away? No way!
Setting Up Your Raspberry Pi – November 23, 1000am – 1200pm

HARC Education and Training meeting, 6:30 PM Tuesday May 28th

HARC Education and Training meeting, 6:30 PM Tuesday May 28th at the Herrick District Library – Groundworks Area, 300 S River Ave, Holland, MI 49423.

Groundworks is located on the west side of the Main Library’s first floor.

This month the topic is More Fun with Op-Amps

“Explore peak detectors that “remember” the maximum voltage reached, as well as Schmitt triggers whose output retain their value until the input changes sufficiently to “trigger” a change in the output. Use these concepts to design a practical circuit: an alarm to warn if your freezer’s temperature has been above freezing.” Understanding Modern Electronics

For those not familiar with the “Understanding Modern Electronics” course it is a series of video lectures presented by Professor Richard Wolfson of Middlebury College. The course consists of 24 lectures that provide a conceptual explanation of the principles of how electrical circuits work and are used to control everyday devices in our modern world. Components and topics that are covered include transformers, transistors, resistors, capacitors, diodes, semiconductors, Ohm’s Law, and analog and digital levels.

The Herrick District Library is asking that individuals register for this event. Event registration can be found at
https://herrickdl.bibliocommons.com/events/65bbd2f7f797a6fee5737b85

HARC education and training sessions are open to the public and you do not need to be a HARC member or have an amateur radio license to attend.  If you have questions about amateur radio equipment, operating practices, licensing, test and measurement, or anything remotely related to amateur radio, this is the place to be.

HARC Antenna Work Performed…

Mike, K8NWN, did about three hours of tower work recently on the 30 foot tower on top of the Warm Friend building downtown Holland. The top, off frequency antenna was taken down and side mounted for the Tulip Time Committee’s repeater, an X50 was put on top, (for the 147.50/146.50 repeater) and a 3 VHF element beam, pointed to the end of the Tulip Time parade route was installed, with a colocated UHF beam, to run the temporary remote receiver to the 147.06 repeater for Tulip Time.

If you hear or see Mike, say a lot of thank you’s for his work.
